Castellare I Sodi di S. Niccolo June 15, 2018

Castellare I Sodi di S. Niccolo ReviewCastellare I Sodi di S. Niccolo
I Sodi di San Niccolò was created in the early 1980s to demonstrate that native grapes could produce a wine with all the power and grace of a Super Tuscan. The name “I Sodi” refers to land that is difficult to till (the grapes must be hand-harvested), and “San Niccolò” is an abandoned church on the Castellare property. This wine captures both the rich history of the vineyard as well as the Sangioveto grape’s enormous potential.

“The 2013 I Sodi di S. Niccolò is 85% Sangioveto (a more antique name for Sangiovese) and 15% Malvasia Nera from a single vineyard. This wine opens to a darkly saturated appearance and shows ruby, garnet and purple highlights. The bouquet is powerful but seamless at the same time with smooth transitions between dark cherry, spice, tobacco and moist clay. In the mouth, this wine shows dense extraction, but it never feels too weighed down by that mass. Instead, the freshness of the fruit and the natural acidity give the wine a bright and buoyant personality. Aged in barrique for 30 months, this is a delightful Tuscan red.” -Rated 96, Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate

MelvilleMelville Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
“Santa Rita Hills” is an official American Viticultural Area, though it is now rendered on labels as “Sta. Rita Hills” to avoid legal conflict with Chile’s huge Santa Rita winery.
The Sta. Rita Hills appellation is where Ron Melville and his sons Brent and Chad Melville decided to develop their estate vineyards and winery. Greg Brewer is the genius behind these brilliant wines from the Sta. Rita Hills in California’s Santa Barbara County.

“Light raspberry-sorbet notes meet with fresh fennel fronds, pepper and cinnamon on the nose of this bottling from Chad Melville and family. It’s tight and tart on the palate, with dried cranberry, pine needle and eucalyptus flavors that juxtapose with the more fruit-driven nose.” -Rated 94, Wine Enthusiast Brilliant ruby in color, vivid aromatics of red currants, cedar and cinnamon stick spring from the glass. On the palate, delicate and lifted floral notes of crushed rose petal and hibiscus are anchored by more tender impressions of strawberry gelatin, tangerine oil, black cherry compote and baked red apples.

Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif ReviewCaymus-Suisun Grand Durif Syrah
Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif is ideally suited to growing certain varieties of grapes. The Wagner family began an in-depth search of “the Suisun” in early 2014 and identified a few top-quality Durif vineyards in the hidden corners of this small picturesque place (Durif is synonymous with Petite Sirah). As they set their sights on producing a Caymus-style wine from one of the world’s heavyweight varieties, they made a promise to themselves that “a new wine bearing the Caymus name would have to be great – or, it would not be bottled.”
Buy Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif 2016
A velvety purple with ruby-red highlights, the 2016 vintage of Grand Durif features an abundant nose of dark plums and baked blueberries, woven with scents of lavender, white rose petals, sweet smoke and brown spice. Entry on the palate is smooth, yielding to a pop of rich, luxurious tannins that then sneak back, revealing lush fruit flavors of dark berry cobbler. What gives this wine its singular character are the tannins – strong yet supple, pronounced while being strikingly soft. The finish is long, with warm, evocative notes of unsweetened cocoa. Still quite young, this vintage can be enjoyed now and also has tremendous aging potential.

Martin Ray Russian River Valley Chardonnay ReviewMartin Ray Russian River Valley Chardonnay
Courtney Benham acquired the historic Martini & Prati winery in July 2003, which is now Martin Ray Winery and the home of their new Tasting Room. The Tasting Room structure, dating back to the 1900’s, used to serve as a stable and bunkhouse where Italian immigrants stayed during harvest and crush.

This wine has a unique balance of approachability and surprising complexity. The blend boasts enticing aromas of golden apple, ripe nectarine and honeydew melon, highlighted by fragrant jasmine blossom and citrusy Meyer lemon with an undertone of vanilla cream. It is fruit forward, with a creamy mid-palate, and clean acidity on the finish. “Very crisp and clear with dried apple, peach, honey and pie crust. Full to medium body, lovely center palate. Lively finish. Partial malo. Great value for outstanding quality.” -Rated 93, Wine Spectator
