MelvilleMelville Sta. Rita Hills Pinot Noir
“Santa Rita Hills” is an official American Viticultural Area, though it is now rendered on labels as “Sta. Rita Hills” to avoid legal conflict with Chile’s huge Santa Rita winery.
The Sta. Rita Hills appellation is where Ron Melville and his sons Brent and Chad Melville decided to develop their estate vineyards and winery. Greg Brewer is the genius behind these brilliant wines from the Sta. Rita Hills in California’s Santa Barbara County.

“Light raspberry-sorbet notes meet with fresh fennel fronds, pepper and cinnamon on the nose of this bottling from Chad Melville and family. It’s tight and tart on the palate, with dried cranberry, pine needle and eucalyptus flavors that juxtapose with the more fruit-driven nose.” -Rated 94, Wine Enthusiast Brilliant ruby in color, vivid aromatics of red currants, cedar and cinnamon stick spring from the glass. On the palate, delicate and lifted floral notes of crushed rose petal and hibiscus are anchored by more tender impressions of strawberry gelatin, tangerine oil, black cherry compote and baked red apples.

Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif ReviewCaymus-Suisun Grand Durif Syrah
Caymus-Suisun Grand Durif is ideally suited to growing certain varieties of grapes. The Wagner family began an in-depth search of “the Suisun” in early 2014 and identified a few top-quality Durif vineyards in the hidden corners of this small picturesque place (Durif is synonymous with Petite Sirah). As they set their sights on producing a Caymus-style wine from one of the world’s heavyweight varieties, they made a promise to themselves that “a new wine bearing the Caymus name would have to be great – or, it would not be bottled.”

A velvety purple with ruby-red highlights, the 2016 vintage of Grand Durif features an abundant nose of dark plums and baked blueberries, woven with scents of lavender, white rose petals, sweet smoke and brown spice. Entry on the palate is smooth, yielding to a pop of rich, luxurious tannins that then sneak back, revealing lush fruit flavors of dark berry cobbler. What gives this wine its singular character are the tannins – strong yet supple, pronounced while being strikingly soft. The finish is long, with warm, evocative notes of unsweetened cocoa. Still quite young, this vintage can be enjoyed now and also has tremendous aging potential.
