The brewery Het Anker is probably the oldest brewery in Belgium that operates to this day. Every year on the 24th of February, Gouden Carolus celebrates the birth of Charles Quint. Therefore they brew a special beer in limited edition called Cuvée of the Emperor. This exceptional beer is a special version of the Golden Carolus Classic, with an enriched taste pallet and mysterious aromas added.

In the 1950s, when a substantial number of breweries stopped their activities or merged, the the Van Breedam family decided to restart brewing strong specialty beers. The focus of this brewing was to create and promote the favorite beer of Emperor Charles V. A dark, very rich, complex, very strong Belgian ale that is typically rich in malt complexity.
