Del Maguey Chichiapa Mezcal reviewDel Maguey Chichiapa Mezcal
Ron Cooper, an artist, founded Del Maguey 20 years ago in an effort to introduce to everybody the mezcals he had discovered on his forays into the backwoods of Oaxaca. Del Maguey Chichicapa is crafted in a village with an 6,000 foot elevation located in broad valley with a desert and tropical micro-climate.

Chichicapa Mezcal has a relatively light nose, yet is deep and sweet on the tongue with a very complex character. Beautiful vegetal notes with flavors of citrus rinds, pepper and smoke make for a perfect introduction to mezcal. It has a long finish, with a distinct smokiness and hint of mint at the end.

Alipus Mezcal San Andres reviewAlipus Mezcal San Andres
Alipus Mezcal offerings are 100% Agave produced in remote pueblos in Oaxaca’s noted Mezcal region, via craft production from artisanal family distilleries. Traditional methods are used, including roasting the agave over wood and stone milling to extract the juice.

Tequila is a mezcal, but tequila producers remove the agave solids before they distill. San Andres is made from espadin grown at about 5,000 feet. It’s a very powerful tasting mezcal with strong fruit but doesn’t overwhelm with alcohol. It is rich and complex and intensely floral.

Dos Tiranos Mezcal reviewDos Tiranos Mezcal
Dos Tiranos Mezcal is made from 100% Agave Mezcal Reposado and is produced in Oaxaca, Mexico. Various legends attribute great strength to anyone brave enough to gulp down the Agave worm and Dos Tiranos has two of them in the bottle. No need to fight over the worm.
Buy Dos Tiranos Mezcal
Not all bottles of mezcal contain a “worm” (actually a the larva of a moth, Hypopta agavis that can infest maguey plants). The worms in Dos Tiranos Mezcal are added during the bottling process. In Mexico, mezcal is generally drunk straight, not mixed in a cocktail. There are a couple of rituals associated with it. One is saying “Arriba, abajo, al centro y pa´ dentro”, (up, down, center and in) before the first shot.

Del Maguey Tobala MezcalDel Maguey Tobala Mezcal
Made only from the wild, rare Tobala agave, a much smaller variety that grows naturally only in the highest altitude, shadowed canyons, Del Maguey Tobala Mezcal is a distinctive incarnation of mezcal that is rarely seen outside of the villages that produce it.

Whenever one mentions Tobalá in a smaller village, the peoples eyes light up and a broad smile covers their face. They say their Ancestors, in times before the maguey began to be cultivated by man in lower altitude fields, always made their mezcal from this wild plant. Del Maguey Tobala Mezcal has a sweet, fruity nose, with a mango and cinnamon taste and long, extra smooth finish.
