Belgian beers are among the best in the world and Belgium’s beer-making history goes back centuries. Under Catholic church permission, local French and Flemish abbeys brewed and distributed beer as a fund raising method. Five Belgian beers are excellent representatives of the various styles of beer that makes Belgium a major player.
Trappist: the brewery must be in a monastery and the monks must play a role in its production
Gueuze: a mixture of young and old lambics into one beer.
Lambic: a beer style that is truly unique to Belgium.
White: the Belgian Wit holds its own in the battle to wheat supremacy
Duvel: the name is derived from the Flemish word for devil
