Lagavulin Single Malt Scotch 16 Year ReviewLagavulin Single Malt Scotch 16 Year
Lagavulin’s richly peaty process water around Port Ellen, runs down the brown burn to the distillery from the Solan Lochs in the hills above the distillery. Though it shares a coastline with two neighbouring distilleries, former owner Peter Mackie took pains to ensure that Lagavulin shares its water with no-one.

The most pungent in terms of pure peat of all the Islay whiskies. Deep gold. Dry peat smoke fills the palate with a gentle but strong sweetness, followed by sea and salt with touches of wood. On the finish the smoke fairly disappears for a while as you enjoy the delicate sweetness, masking the next wave of toast at the outer limits.

Samichlaus Helles Beer ReviewSamichlaus Helles Beer
Samichlaus is brewed by Castle Eggenberg, the oldest family owned brewery in Austria. It dates back at least to the year 999 A.D. Helles is German for “bright” and this beer is supposed to be a paler version of the traditional Samichlaus. Samichlaus is brewed only once a year, on Dec. 6, and aged for 10 months before bottling.
Buy Samichlaus Helles Beer
Samichlaus is dangerously drinkable, with a lovely pale amber color, a toasty malt aroma and an exquisitely concentrated, liqueur-like sweetness that some may find cloying. A beer this big is an ideal candidate for cellaring, and it will be interesting to see how further aging may dry it out and reveal some of the vanilla and spice notes lurking beneath the sugar.
